Outspoken Murangá senator Irungu Kang'ata has said Deputy President William Ruto is the only recognised kingpin across the Mt Kenya region.

Kang'ata said there was no other political kingpin from the larger Mt Kenya region apart from Ruto, maintaining that all leaders and locals from the region should pay their allegiance to the second in command.

"We all know that the people of Central Kenya and the Mt Kenya region are firmly behind Ruto. He is our political kingpin. So, anyone who is purporting to become a Kikuyu king doesn't know what he is doing," Kang'ata told journalists in Murang'a.

Kang'ata's remarks followed the Saturday, May 22, coronation of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi at Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine in Murang'a county.

Vehicles carrying delegations from across the Mt Kenya region started arriving at the Kikuyu holy ground very early on the morning for the ceremony, which was seen as a huge political boost for Muturi.

However, Kang'ata, who appeared to pour cold water on Muturi's coronation, cautioned that anyone who would not follow the path of Ruto would risk failing terribly in the region.

"Our political king is Ruto, and we are going to fight and defeat anyone who will not follow his path like will we did in the Juja parliamentary polls," Kang'ata said while also thanking Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria for withdrawing his People Empowerment Party (PEP) candidate from the Kiambaa parliamentary race.

According to Kang'ata, he was among those who advised Kuria to withdraw from the race after extensive discussions with Ruto.

"Many thought we were not going to win. Still, on Kiambaa, I personally told my friend Kuria to reconsider presenting a candidate, and I am happy he has agreed to that request. We. We. We will work together to deliver Kiambaa to the hustler nation," he explained.

He added the hustler movement was united ahead of the Kiambaa by-election slated for July 15, 2021.

"Our course is bigger than our internal sibling rivalry, and therefore I want to assure everyone that we shall work together for a common course in Kiambaa."
