Medics on the run after expectant woman bleeds to death

St Teresa hospital in Kikuyu, Kiambu county, is on the spot after a woman died while giving birth at the health facility.

The woman, only identified as Hellen, went to the health facility after Kijabe hospital, where she had been going for prenatal check ups, said they no longer accepted payment via NHIF.

A report by Citizen TV revealed the mother was then admitted at St Teresa hospital where she was expected to have a safe delivery of her third born.

Hellen's family said she was induced into labour and that was when she reportedly started bleeding.

She was then left unattended for four hours and later taken to theater where both the mother and her unborn baby died, an incident the family termed an act of negligence.

"Hellen was admitted at St. Teresa hospital to give birth to her third child. She was induced and later started to bleed profusely.She was taken to theater almost four hours later. We do not know at what point she and her baby died. We do not know who to turn to for help," a," said one of the family members.

The family claimed the health facility's management kept silent about the unfortunate turn of events and were forced to use the help of the police to get information out of the management.

The medics are reported to have gone into hiding even as the family seeks to find out the cause of their kin's death.

They also brought their pathologist to help them unravel the mystery but the hospital declined an autopsy request citing lack of Hellen's medical report, a report that the family claimed they were in possession of.

Police visited the facility but said that there was nothing much they could do.

They referred the family to Kiambu county health CEC’s office which only offered to carry out an audit.
